Is it the 78-year-old American actress and singer, Lainie Kazan a kleptomaniac or she was really desperate for some groceries?
Kazan was caught while trying to shoplift from a grocery store in the San Fernando Valley in California yesterday.
According to Daily Mail, the ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ star actress was busted by the cops with about $180 worth of groceries.
Lainie Kazan is a 78-year-old American actress and singer.
A little too old to be stealing, you would say.
She is most famous for her appearances in the 2002 movie, ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding’ and its 2016 sequel ‘My Big Fat Greek Wedding 2’.
Lainie has also made appearances in several other high profile movies such as ‘The Delta Force’, ‘Harry and the Hendersons’, ‘Beaches’, ‘A Good Night to Die’, and ‘Red Riding Hood’.

Kazan made her Broadway debut in ‘The Happiest Girl in the World’ in 1961.
As her popularity increased, Kazan posed nude for a spread in the October 1970 issue of Playboy and her appearance in the magazine opened the door for her to headline and operate two different Playboy Jazz Clubs which she called ‘Lainie’s Lounge’.
Kazan joined the cast of ‘Desperate Housewives’ for Season 7 and she played the role of a self-employed business owner and neighbor to Susan.
One would think after appearing so much in the spotlight, winning several awards and making a lot of money, stealing from a grocery store would be the least on Kazan’s list of options but no.
The actress earned herself a criminal record just yesterday, the eve of the Christmas of 2017.
She was arrested on Sunday for trying to steal food from a Gelson’s grocery store in the San Fernando Valley, California.
After loading her cart with about 180 dollars worth of groceries, Lainie was said to have stuffed all the food into several reusable bags and then tried to sneak it off all to her car.
A member of the staff of the said store, ‘Gelson’s grocery store’ saw her during the ‘attempted heist’ and blew the whistle by calling the police on her.
We hope her holiday and Christmas was not ruined.
When asked the reason why she tried to make off with the groceries, Kazan said she didn’t have any money on her and that was why she tried to make a run for it and not pay for them.
Now, could that really be possible? Kazan has had a very successful career by all standards.
Having acted since the late 1960s, Kazan has even been nominated for an Emmy for her guest role in ‘St. Elsewhere’ in 1988.
The Brooklyn native was nominated for a Golden Globe for ‘My Favorite Year’ which she also received a Tony Award nomination for in 1993.
Her attempt at being a light-fingered shopper was obviously not very well thought out and could have had grave consequences for her.
Although when the cops came, Kazan was detained for petty theft and taken to a police station in handcuffs, luckily for her, Kazan didn’t get any prison time or anything like that.
She was given a citation, which is a document issued to a minor violator by the police stating the charge and requiring an appearance before a judge on a specified date, subject to punishment for failure to appear.
However, Kazan needed no bail to be released.
Speculations flying around now is that maybe this is not the first time Kazan has shoplifted but it’s just the first time she ran out of luck and the long arm of the law caught up to her.
Although this is very unlikely, it might be feasible.
