How to Choose the Right Fishing Essentials for Starters

Fishing is one of the best outdoor activities to refresh and relax from stress. Going fishing allows you to have some quality time by yourself, with family, or with your friends. However, if you’re still a beginner, you might find fishing a bit complicated, especially when it comes to the gear you should get. Fishing gear may seem complicated for some people as there are a lot of varieties and if you don’t choose the one that suits your level and skills, you may have unpleasant fishing experience. To avoid that, choose your fishing essentials carefully. Here are some simple ways to choose the right gear for you.

Rods

Your fishing rods are the durable yet flexible poles that you use to cast your line far and deep in the water. As a beginner, you need to choose one with medium strength. However, it also depends on the type of fishing you’re going to do and the type of water you’ll be fishing in. Knowing where you’re going to fish will help you choose a suitable rod. Fishing in freshwater and saltwater is totally different and needs different types of rods of different materials. Rods differ in strength, flexibility, and bending ability. Once you know the type of water you’re fishing in, you’ll be able to choose the right rod and enjoy your fishing experience.

Reels

The fishing reel allows you to draw in your line to get the fish. They’re usually lightweight and easy to handle. However, some reels are hard to attach to the rods, so it’s better to get a rod and reel combo to ensure they’re compatible and easy to use. If you want to get each separately, then a spinning reel is the best option for you. Spinning reels are the easiest to control making them the best option for people that just started fishing. They also allow you to fish from a boat, shore, or anywhere you like.

Fishing Line

When getting beginner fishing rods and reels, you’ll most likely get a fishing line with them. So you don’t need to worry about the type of fishing line for a while. However, if you want to change the fishing line and get one yourself, you have to know the difference between a braid and a monofilament line. The monoline is the most common type that many people use because it’s easy to handle and tie knots without any hassle. On the other hand, a braided line is hard to knot but has a higher resistance and is preferred when catching big fish.

Hooks

There are a variety of sizes and types of hooks based on the size of fish you’re trying to catch. There are single hooks and triple hooks. It’s better to start your fishing journey with a single circle or recurve hooks with different sizes. Choosing hooks is not complicated, but you’ll need to learn how to set the hook before fishing.

Bait

The bait is what you use to attract the fish so you can catch them. There are two types of bait, live and artificial. There is a variety of live bait to choose from because each fish type is attracted to a certain type of bait. Worms and minnows are the most common bait for beginners and for fishing in freshwater. You can go to any bait shop and tell them where you’re going fishing and they’ll recommend the best bait for you. To store bait, you have to use a tin can filled with grass and soil and keep them in a dim, cold place until you go fishing.

Artificial baits, also known as lures, are used in case you run out of live bait. They are designed to look exactly like real fish. Plastic lures with long tails are one of the most effective artificial baits to use. You can also choose light-colored lures in clear water. However, if you’re fishing in dark water, you will need darker lures so fish can easily see it.

If you love to connect with nature and experience the great outdoors, then going on a fishing trip on the weekend with your friends can be a great, fun experience. However, if you don’t have the right gear you might not be able to enjoy it. That’s why it’s essential to choose your gear carefully and get the ones that match your skills. If you’re not sure what type of rod and reel to get for your type of fishing, ask anyone with experience to help you choose the right fishing essentials.
