How to Make Your Hair Colour Last Longer

Do you find that your hair colour fades quickly? If so, you’re not alone. Many of us have had the experience of having our beautiful colour fade away after just a few weeks. But there’s no need to despair. We have some tips for you to keep your hair colour looking vibrant and healthy for longer.

Use Colour Safe Shampoo and Conditioner

Using shampoo and conditioner specifically made for coloured hair will help keep the vibrancy of your hair colour by locking in moisture and preventing it from fading too quickly. When shopping for products, look for ones that are labelled “colour safe” or “colour protecting.” These products usually contain ingredients such as keratin, which helps strengthen the hair shaft, and silicone, which helps protect the colour from fading due to UV exposure.

Use Hair Toner in Between Colouring Treatments

Hair toners help balance out any brassy tones that may appear after a few weeks of having coloured hair. They also help to refresh the overall look of your colour and add shine. To make sure you don’t damage your hair with too much product build-up, use toners when needed instead of constantly applying them every time you wash your hair.

Limit Exposure to Heat

Heat can cause damage to your hair if used too often or at too high temperatures. Try air-drying or towel-drying rather than using a hairdryer whenever possible to prevent this from happening. If you must use heat tools such as curling irons or flat irons, use a heat protectant spray before styling and always use the lowest setting possible on these tools (preferably below 300°F). The less heat applied to your strands, the longer they will stay vibrant and healthy-looking.

Rinse With Cool Water

Hot water can strip away natural oils on the scalp that are essential for keeping coloured hair looking its best. It is important to rinse with cool water after shampooing and conditioning, as this will help lock in moisture and prevent fading due to heat exposure.

Avoid Over Washing

Washing coloured hair too frequently can strip away essential oils that are necessary for nourishing it properly. Try washing two times per week at most—and only when necessary—to ensure that your colour stays intact longer without needing any touch-ups or extra treatments.

Protect Hair From Sun

Sun exposure can cause damage to both natural and coloured hairs alike by drying out strands, making them prone to breakage over time. Always wear a hat when outdoors during peak hours (10am – 4pm) in order to protect your locks from harsh UV rays – especially if you have lightened hair.

Touch Up Roots as Needed

Depending on how often you wash or style your tresses, some roots may need touching up every couple of months or so in order for everything to remain even throughout all sections of the head – including highlights/balayage pieces near the front/crown area being touched up at least once every four months.

For darker colours, however, root touch-ups may only be necessary once every six months or so, depending on how quickly new growth appears near the scalp line/base area.

Keeping your coloured locks looking vibrant doesn’t have to be hard. By following these simple tips—such as using colour-safe shampoo and conditioner, limiting exposure to heat, rinsing with cool water, avoiding over washing and protecting from the sun —you’ll be sure to maintain vibrant tresses all year round without needing frequent touch-ups. So get started today and enjoy those beautiful locks.
