Lil Nas X is having an incredible year due to the global success of his hit single Old Town Road. The 20-year-old has bravely opened up about his decision to come out as gay back in June.
He admitted society still has “a long way to go” towards accepting and celebrating homosexuality.
But talking to Gayle King on CBS This Morning, he confessed that at first he hoped being gay was “just a phase.”
“I knew,” he told her. “Specially around my teenage years, I was just like, you know, praying, praying, praying that it was like a phase. Yeah, go away.”
The Panini artist admits it’s far easier being gay as a famous pop star compared to a young teen.
“I mean ’cause, me been in this position, it’s easy for me, but, like, some little boy, ten miles from here, it’s not going to be good for him.”
“But you still have a long way to go. You know, someone who’s like, listening to me in school right now, it’s like ‘you gay cause you listening to him. There’s still a lot to be done of course but I do believe it’s helping.”
His interview aired on Monday, days after the award-winning artist announced he was taking “a little time off.”
He cancelled scheduled appearances at TwitchCon in San Diego, California, and at the Sandbox Music Festival in Mesa, Arizona. Lil Nas X apologized to fans and admitted he needed time to rest and recharge after a “wild seven months.”
In a tweet on Friday, Nas wrote: “it’s been a wild last 7 months and im ready to take a little time off. sorry to everyone attending twitchcon or the sandbox music festival, i will not be there. i love u guys and will make it up to you some way.”
Lil Nas X single Old Town Road broke records as the longest-running number one song on the Billboard charts. It spent 19 weeks at the top spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
It beat the record of “One Sweet Day” by Mariah Carey and R&B group Boyz II Men. The song spent 16 weeks atop the Billboard Hot 100.
