When you go to college you finally have a taste of what it’s like to be an adult.
You expect to meet like-minded people and grow in a mature environment.
But sadly sometimes this is not the case.
Truly disgusting footage has emerged showing students from Nottingham Trent University chanting ‘we hate the blacks’ outside a fellow undergrad’s door.
Rufaro Chisango posted the disturbing clip onto Twitter, claiming it had been filmed on Monday night at the university.
In the clip, at least two men can be heard signing a number of football-style chants – but changing the words to adopt racist language.
The sickening songs include, ‘We hate the blacks – we are the black haters,’ and ‘ooh ahh f**k the blacks’, while one man also responds to a female by saying: ‘Blacks and whites will never be together.’
A woman also can be heard shouting ‘leave her alone’.
Ms Chisango, the only black person on her floor, posted a message alongside the recording that read: ‘Yoo I’m fuming, the way people in the same uni halls as me are chanting “we hate the blacks” outside my bedroom door.’
‘Words cannot describe how sad this makes me feel, in this 2018 people think this is still acceptable.’
On Twitter, she added: ‘Okay this happened Monday night, the video wasn’t able to catch what else they were saying which was “blacks would go back to picking cotton”.
‘I’m the only black person on my floor and they were chanting this outside my door so don’t be surprised to why I didn’t leave my room.”
‘I told the reception and they said that this will be dealt with Tuesday morning, they took my details and said they would inform me.’
‘I’ve written a statement and have sent it to the uni and I’m waiting for a response… but I want to highlight how serious this is and if I had broken their table or anything they would have dealt with it straight away but not this.’
The footage was quickly re-tweeted thousands of times after Ms Chisango posted it on Wednesday night, with hundreds of people replying to express their disgust.
One of those who replied was the university in a tweet that said: ‘We are investigating this as a matter of urgency. We are taking this extremely seriously and do not tolerate behaviour like this.’
Nottinghamshire Police also responded, tweeting: ‘Good evening. If you’ve not already done so, please can you give us a call on 101 to report this.’
Hundreds of people tweeted Ms Chisango after she posted the clip. Neil Stove wrote: ‘This is beyond disgusting.’
‘This cannot be allowed to go unpunished. I hope @TrentUni expel these disgusting racist scum and @nottspolice charge them with hate crimes. I’m so so sorry you had to experience this.’
Emily Sandwich tweeted: ‘I go to Trent too, this is disgusting. @TrentUni those students need to be named and shamed and dropped from their course. What can we (as Trent students) do to back you on this? Unacceptable.’
And Martha Longdon, student union president at the university, tweeted: ‘Hi, I’ve only just become aware of this, however, the behaviour you have described is unacceptable. ‘
‘Please could you DM me so we can start to resolve this? In the meantime if you have any immediate concerns for your safety and well-being I would advise contacting Notts Police.’
Ms Chisango wrote on her Twitter: ‘I just want to thank everyone for their kind messages and all the support. Darkness cannot drive out darkness only light can do that.’
‘Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that. – DR Martin Luther King JR.’
Nottinghamshire Police have now confirmed two men, both aged 18, have been arrested on suspicion of racially aggravated public order offences.
