They were a well respected Atlanta family who were loved by many.
But mom Marsha Edwards, 58, is suspected of shooting dead her two adult children. She then reportedly turned the gun on herself.
Police conducted a welfare check at the Edwards family home in Vinings on Wednesday evening.
Cops arrived to the home at 3000 block, Nobility Way, at around 6pm and witnessed a tragic scene. The dead bodies of Marsha Edwards along with her daughter Erin Edwards, 20, and son Chris Edwards, 24.
Their deaths come days after returning Marsha returned home from a vacation in Italy with her daughter.
Why Marsha Edwards, a physician who owned medical supply company MME Enterprise, committed such a heinous act remains a mystery.
She was divorced from her children’s father Dr. Christopher Edwards, a prominent orthopedic surgeon. It’s unclear when they separated. According to NBC , he was notified of their deaths Wednesday.
Dr. Christopher released a statement via the family spokesperson Jeff Dickerson.
“Dr. Edwards, his extended family and friends are in a state of grief and shock, and privacy of the family is paramount as arrangements are being made,” it read.
Everything seemed fine just two days ago when Marsha posted on social media that she was enjoying a vacation with her daughter Erin in Italy.
The pair visited the Vatican City, Rome and Venice.
On Wednesday, the same day as the murder/suicide, Marsha posted to Instagram: “I’ve had the best summer, first with Chis in Miami, and Erin in Italy. I could not ask for better children.”
The Edwards lived in a wealthy gated townhouse community called Vinings Parc East, located 12miles outside downtown Atlanta, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
The Edwards family was well known in the Atlanta community and had a close friendship with Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms.
Dr. Christopher Edwards was the son of the late Delmar Edwards, who was the first black orthopedic surgeon in Columbus, Georgia.
In April, her daughter Erin wrote about her mother’s achievements.
Marsha was named one of Atlanta’s 100 most powerful and influential women of 2019 by the Women Works Media Group.
Erin was a junior student at Boston University studying journalism. She had just finished a summer internship with NBC New York.
The station’s vice president, Benjamin Berkowitz, expressed condolences to Erin Edwards’ family and friends in a statement.
“Erin Edwards was a gifted storyteller with a passion for her work,’ Berkowitz said. ‘Her enthusiasm was infectious and her smile lit up a room. She was an incredibly decent, kind person who earned our admiration. Her talent was truly God-given.”
Evening anchor Stefan Holt said in a newscast on Thursday: “All of us in the newsroom just shocked to hear this news.”
“Erin was a special person — exuberant, cheerful, a gifted story teller who just had a passion for journalism and it showed.”
Chris was digital content manager for the City of Atlanta and worked in the Mayor’s Office of Entertainment, according to WXIA.
The family were members of the National Association of Black Journalists and the three recently attended an NABJ event in Miami.
Police have not released any further information about the apparent double murder-suicide and the investigation is ongoing.
