How To Pass Your Driving Test The First Time

driving test

If you have picked the right driving school and have been practicing your driving skills, then you likely feel ready to take your driving test to get your license. The thing to keep in mind is that a driving test is very specific. It is surprisingly easy to fail a driving test the first time.

What’s important is to demonstrate that you have a deep understanding of the rules of the road and can avoid accidents as well as not cause any yourself. Before you can pick out the cheapest auto insurance and start commuting to school and work, you had better be ready for the test. In this article, we will go over what it takes to pass the driving test the first time that you take it.

Always SMOG

The acronym SMOG is easy to remember. What isn’t easy to remember is to always use it. SMOG stands for Signal, Mirror, Over the shoulder, and Go. This is the series of steps you should always take when changing lanes or making a turn. Before you make a move you have to always signal your intentions so other drivers have time to react to what you are doing.

Then, while your signal is going, check your mirror to see if any cars are behind you and approaching. Take a look over the shoulder to make sure there isn’t a car in your blind spot. Finally, go and make your move in safety.

Forgetting to do things in this order is one of the primary reasons for failure.

Go the proper speed

A very common mistake is to overcompensate with speed. That is to say that many new drivers want to drive safely and avoid speeding. While this is always a good idea, they typically end up taking the opposite approach and drive far too slowly. Driving too slow is also a dangerous thing to do.

Other drivers expect a car to be driving the speed limit and can often approach you too quickly. There is even the temptation to pass slow drivers which poses an accident risk for everybody around.

Make sure to always stay within 5 miles per hour of the speed limit in either direction. Don’t go less than that and definitely never go above, either.

Calm your nerves

Nerves play a big part in many failures since it is difficult to concentrate when your nerves take over. It is easy to say to not be nervous but harder to actually do so. This is why it’s important to take measures that work to help calm your nerves before the exam.

About 30 minutes before the exam, do some light exercises. It can be some stretching to loosen up and get the blood flowing. Or, take a brisk walk around the area where your exam will be held. The idea is that when you get your blood flowing it releases the serotonin hormone which is a feel-good chemical.

Then, you’ll be very calm before the exam.
