It should have been the happiest time of her life.
But sadly the body of pregnant 21-year-old Makayla Winston has been found in Lexington.
A Mississippi man, believed to be her boyfriend, Terrence K. Sample, was arrested Monday in connection with her death.
He was booked into Holmes-Humphreys County Regional Correctional Facility. Holmes County Sheriff Willie March says the 33-year-old has been charged with two counts of murder.
On Tuesday, Sample was charged with capital murder for the unborn baby’s death, and kidnapping and murder in connection with Winston’s death.
He was denied bail at a hearing on Wednesday.
The Holmes County Sheriff also revealed that another woman Sample was allegedly romantically involved with is being questioned.
Winston’s aunt, Annie Kimbrough, previously told WAPT: “She loved this baby she was carrying.”
“She loved a man, this baby’s daddy. She was a happy young woman.”
Despite what Winston’s family are saying, Sample told investigators he was not in a relationship with Winston.
According to the Clarion Ledger, Makayla Winston’s body was found Monday about six miles away from her abandoned car.
Her four-door Pontiac Grand Prix was found by sheriff’s deputies at the intersection of Mississippi Highway 14 and Interstate 55 in Holmes County on Friday.
Her keys were still in the ignition and and her cell phone was found discarded in the grass nearby.
There was an effort made to delete text messages and any correspondence.
“The cell phone was cleaned up so we’re also doing an investigation on the cellular phone, trying to find out what was erased,” March previously said.
Winston, who was due to give birth today (July 4.)
She was last seen alive on Thursday when she drove to show Sample the sonogram a week before the baby’s due date, according to her family.
“She was heading to show the sonogram to the baby’s father,’ her mother Yvetty Brown said. ‘We went looking to where we thought she would be, but she wasn’t there.”
