The coronavirus struck quickly and unexpectedly in 2020 and has changed our lives forever. Our civil liberties have been taken away as no longer are we freely able to socialize with our friends and families, non-essential shops have been closed down, and sports and social clubs have been shut to try and combat the spread of the deadly virus. Many of us have become furloughed from our jobs, or worse, have been made redundant, and for those of us with jobs, we find ourselves working from home.
This has all meant that we have an awful lot more time on our hands than we used to, and if we don’t find something to fill that time with, we risk becoming bored and having mental health problems. One of the best new hobbies that you can take up during lockdown is to learn a new musical instrument, so in this article, we are going to take a look at some of the perfect instruments for you. Read on to find out more.
Guitar
The guitar is one of the easiest instruments to pick up, and it is also one of the most social to play. We all have memories of being sat around a campfire when we were younger singing songs, and there would always be that one person playing the guitar keeping the whole sing-song together. Maybe that ignited an interest in learning the instrument, or maybe it was listening to rock bands over the years and wishing you could be the next Jimi Hendrix or Eric Clapton? Whatever the reason, now is the time to pick up the guitar and learn. They can be inexpensive for beginners, you can find a mountain of tutorials online, and they are not so loud that they will drive the neighbors or the people that you live with up the wall.
The Drums
If you are into your rock music, then learning the drums will always have been at the forefront of your mind having watched greats such as John Bonham or Ginger Baker hold a band together with their artful rhythm and mesmerizing beats. Experts from APassant.net say that now that the world is in lockdown, this could be the perfect opportunity for you to purchase a drum kit and learn your own sense of rhythm. A full kit can be expensive, and maybe your neighbors will never speak to you again, but if you are feeling frustrated at being cooped up indoors all day long, then what better way to let out your anger and pent up emotion than by learning to play the drums? Once we all emerge from the other side of lockdown, you can join a band and put your hours of practice to good use by performing on stage. What a thrill that would be!
Recorder
The recorder is the instrument that young children often start with as it gives them an easy introduction to music and allows them to get their ears trained to different notes. It is also a small instrument, with the holes close together, so is perfect for tiny hands in a way that other wind instruments such as a saxophone or a clarinet aren’t. They are dirt cheap and exercise books are readily available, so if your children have no musical hobbies at present, now is the time to introduce them to the recorder, and who knows by Christmas they may have learned their first few carols that they can entertain you with after you have finished your Turkey dinner.
The Trumpet
The trumpet is often the centerpiece of an orchestra or a brass band, and for good reason, as it can be one of the loudest instruments in the orchestra. Having only three valves, many people see it as a simple instrument to master, when in fact it is extremely difficult as actually, the shape of your mouth will have a huge impact on the notes that you produce. Although they are not cheap to buy new, you can always find second-hand models to practice on, and you can use online tutorials to master the mouth shapes that you will need to hit the right notes. So, if you are undecided about what to learn during the lockdown and fancy something that packs a punch, the trumpet could be for you.
As we have learned, there are many different instruments that you can practice during the lockdown. The recorder is a perfect introduction to music for young children, and the guitar is an instrument all adults can learn with ease. The drums will help channel the inner rock star in you, although they may annoy your neighbors, and the trumpet allows you to master something where you will always be the center of attention. So, don’t delay and pick up a musical instrument!
