Planning an Epic Surf Trip: A Guide for Adventurous Wave Hunters

It doesn’t matter whether you have any experience or not when it comes to surfing, there comes a time in most people’s lives when they decide to embark on a journey and visit some faraway surf location where they’ll be able to distance themselves from the rest of the world and just enjoy the waves (and the sound they make).

That’s because surfing is not only an entertaining activity, but a relaxing one as well, which is one of the main reasons why even less experienced ones are ready to leave everything behind (for a few days, of course) and just go.

However, you cannot have a spectacular time without some preparation. And this particularly refers to those who’ve never done it before. So if you want to have an awesome time, then don’t forget to take a look at my tips below!

Surfing Can Be Learned Even On Vacation

Just because you’ve never surfed before, it doesn’t mean that you’re not supposed to enjoy your first surf vacation and just sit there on the beach and watch others surf. No way Jose! But is it possible to become a solid surfer within a few days?

Of course, it is! However, passionate water lovers at The Coastal Side would like to remind you that it isn’t as difficult as you may think, but that doesn’t instantly mean it’s a piece of cake. It all depends on your will and effort, and above all, the person who is giving you instructions.

Even if you do not find someone who is going to help you excel in it, fortunately, there are a lot of websites that can provide you with some basic tips to assist you in becoming relatively good at this.

On the other hand, if you’re not a beginner, then I think it would be amazing if you tried out the latest surf gear (at the destination you’ve chosen) and consult the locals to see if they have any useful tips when it comes to hunting down the best spots for surfing.

Have A Brief Consultation With Your Fellow Travelers

This is intended for those who won’t be traveling alone. Namely, since you are planning your next surf trip with your friends, then I think that you first must have a brief discussion when it comes to this.

What do I mean by that? Well, for starters, it wouldn’t hurt to ask them what sorts of waves they want to surf, or whether they plan on having any extra activities (besides surfing, of course) or not.

All of these things must be discussed before you plan anything else, otherwise, you may end up fighting and spoiling the entire vacation. Keep in mind that everyone is different. Some people love under-utilized surf, and love to camp at difficult-to-access places, while then there are those who are more into something conventional where they can do various things besides surfing

Therefore, it’s of huge importance to figure all these things out before you plan anything else. Remember that everybody has different needs and preferences.

Want To Become Better Faster? Warm Water!

If you are eager to become a pro at surfing, then I could tell you right now that you must definitely opt for a destination with warm water. Why is that? Well, that’s because you’ll be spending a lot more time in the water then, which means you’ll have a lot more time to hone your skills.

Plus, if you opt for warmer water, then you won’t be obligated to wear tons of gear, but just bring a wetsuit top and board shorts. Not to mention the fact that when you have fewer things, you instantly become a lot more physically flexible because you do not carry as much weight on your body.

And that’s something that can certainly positively impact your overall learning experience and help you become good at it much quicker. Consequently, if you want to have some unforgettable surfing, don’t forget that warm water is the key!

Explore The Waters

Speaking of water, there are some other things that must be properly investigated when it comes to this trip. If you haven’t picked your destination, then I want to remind you that there are some factors that you need to take into account first.

They include things like, water temperatures, surf conditions, and sea creatures that inhabit the water. Why is this type of research so important? Well, precisely something like this is going to help you uncover whether the waves (at the place that piqued your interest) are non-existent, or even maybe too large for you and everyone else who travels with you.

Additionally, even though it is widely known that jellyfish and sharks reside in these waters, you still have to remember that in certain months when these waters boast an abundance of these creatures, and if that’s the case, then you should either select a different location or different time frame.

Or at least (if none of these two are an option) what you can do is equip yourself with top-notch gear to stay protected as much as possible.

What Is The Best Surf Destination?

There are numerous countries that can be defined as spectacular surf destinations, however, I will mention just a few.

  1. Portugal- Not only is this country one of the most beautiful countries in Europe (and the world in general) but it can also be described as Europe’s heart of surfing with roughly 3000 hours of sunshine and over 800 km of coastline. Once you notice its beautiful beaches, you will want to stay there forever.
  2. Australia – If there’s one country that’s a true surf haven, then it’s precisely this one. It comes with breathtaking nature, beautiful culture, and above all, high-quality waves.
  3. Costa Rica – If you’re looking for a place where you can effectively ride some waves, and chill simultaneously, then you must definitely go there!
