Believe it or not, at one point Marvel was not the household name that it is today. Marvel filed for bankruptcy and was unable to stay afloat. After a series of bad decisions and unsuccessful releases, Marvel began to license film rights for some of its popular characters such as X-Men, Spiderman, and Blade. This worked for a while, but Marvel was failing to benefit from this arrangement. They earned only $65 million of the $3billion that Spiderman 1 & 2 had generated.
To get themselves out of their predicament, Marvel took out a loan and released the movie that would change everything for the franchise. In 2008, Marvel released Iron Man, with Robert Downey Jr. starring as the Genius, billionaire, playboy, philanthropist. Fortunately for Marvel, every risk they took was worth it.
As of today, 27 Marvel movies have been released, and 11 TV shows. Almost all of their movies have been box office smashes, four of which are also in the list of the Highest Grossing Films of All-Time. Avengers Endgame comes in at the second position, Infinity War at fifth, Spiderman: No Way Home at sixth, and The Avengers at ninth.
Now, you can catch these movies on streaming services as well. Disney bought Marvel Entertainment, which would lead many to believe that all content would be available on Disney+. While the majority of content is available on there, they do not have the right to stream some of the existing content.
To help you out, we have listed out the various streaming services that offer subscribers with Marvel content. You will need access to a reliable internet connection to enjoy this content. What’s Missing From Disney Plus?
Disney+ doesn’t have access to four of Marvel’s movies. When Marvel was selling the rights to its characters earlier, Sony decided to purchase the film rights to Spider-man. This includes the three movies released under Marvel, with Tom Holland as the lead character. So, while this may change later on, you will not find Spiderman movies on Disney Plus for a while.
Additionally, Universal Pictures purchased the movie rights to The Incredible Hulk. So, while Marvel can continue to create content with him, Universal would get a share of the profits. Due to this arrangement, you would be unable to stream The Incredible Hulk anywhere but only rent or stream it. However, things may be changing with Marvel’s newest She-Hulk that is due to release this year.
Netflix
As of today, Netflix has a wide range of Marvel-related content for you to enjoy. Before, Disney Plus, Marvel had been the chosen streaming service, where they released some very popular TV shows. You can enjoy shows like those listed below:
- Daredevil
- Jessica Jones
- Luke Cage
- Iron Fist
- Defenders
- The Punisher
- Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
You may also be glad to hear that two of three Spiderman movies are available for stream on Netflix as well. You can find Spider-Man: Homecoming on Netflix, as well as Spider-Man: Far From Home. However, it will be some time before you get to see the most recent film, Spider-Man: No Way Home on the streaming service. Any Spiderman movie that is released between 2022-2026 will initially stream I Netflix, before moving to Disney+.
In Summary
As you can tell by now, all the new releases will show up on Disney+. However, older releases can be found on alternate streaming services due to the increasingly confusing existing contracts. If you are a dedicated Marvel fan that would like access to all of their content, Disney Plus isn’t enough for you. You don’t have access to one of their most important superheroes at the moment, Spiderman.
With the release of Spider-Man: No Way Home, fans would also be required to view the previously release five Spider-Man movies that also lie under Sony’s labels. As the multiverse expands, fans would be required to view additional movies as well such as Fantastic Four and X-Men, which can be found on Disney+.
