All Julia Martin wanted to do was move on with her life.
She had ended her engagement with 35-year-old Rodney Harvey Jr. six months ago.
After holding onto the engagement ring, Julia felt it was the right to give the ring back to Rodney.
But instead of a civil meeting, Rodney ambushed Julia at her home in the 3000 block of South King Drive, Chicago.
He repeatedly stabbed her before jumping to his death from a window.
Julia spent her final moments desperately trying to reach her father. But sadly he missed all of her calls and did not see her last text message until after she was dead.
Before calling her father, Julia desperately called 911 and told the dispatcher the name of the person who attacked her.
Speaking to the Chicago Tribune, Julia’s father Derrick said Julia called and texted him and other loved ones begging for help.
‘She called another friend and she was panting over the phone trying to get her breath,’ Mr Martin told the paper. ‘He [friend] thought it was a prank and he hung up on her.’
Julia then frantically sent a text to her father that read: ‘Call me ASAP.’
But tragically Derrick only saw the message much later, when his precious baby girl was already dead.
Julia and her former fiancé, Rodney Harvey, were rushed to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
They were both pronounced dead less than 20 minutes apart.
Julia’s heartbroken father revealed that the murder-suicide came about six months after his daughter had broken up with Rodney.
The former couple dated for three years.
Derrick Martin never believed his daughter’s ex- fiancé could commit such a horrific act.
Shortly before her death, Derrick had spoken to his 28-year-old daughter about her relationship with her ex.
Julia told him she was planning to return her engagement ring to Rodney because it was the “right thing to do.”
Last Friday evening, Rodney came over to Julia’s apartment.
He pretended he was going to pick up the ring and leave, but instead he stabbed her multiple times before taking his own life.
Derrick Martin, who has a younger daughter and a grandchild, described Julia as ambitious and hardworking.
Originally from Detroit, Julia graduated from Michigan State University.
She worked as a human resources supervisor at an architecture firm in Chicago. Her dad said her ultimate goal was to move to New York City.
Just a few weeks ago Julia got her passport in anticipation of a planned trip to Africa this winter.
Sadly for Derrick he is all to familiar with losing loved.
Julia’s murder comes two years after her mother, Derrick’s wife of 20 years, died of heart disease.
He also recently lost both his parents and his brother.
Meanwhile Rodney’s family have come under fire for the way they have reacted to the murder/suicide.
The very next day after the Rodney murdered Julia and killed himself, Rodney’s mother, Lynda Crawford Harvey, launched a GoFundMe campaign.
She asked for donations to help cover his funeral expenses.
In the description of the fundraiser, the mother writes of Rodney that he was her first born and that he ‘died unexpectedly.’ It makes no mention of Julia Martin, or the circumstances of Rodney’s death.
‘He loved me, his mom, but was sometimes deeply troubled,’ Mrs Harvey wrote. ‘You never expect someone you love to die so young.
‘I saw my son, Rodney just last week and he hugged me so tight I almost couldn’t breathe. I didn’t break the hug. “I love you, Mom” he said. I hope I was always there for him.’
Surprisingly, in just three days, the fundraiser has drawn $6,250 in donations, easily meeting and then surpassing its initial goal of $4,000.
But many social media users have blasted Crawford Harvey for seeking money for the man who murdered Julia Martin.
