Big Chop? Cut the Hair, Keep the Confidence With Wigs

No matter how excited you are to finally embrace your natural hair, there’s an awkward phase between the Big Chop and when it hits your shoulders. The stage when your hair is no longer a teeny weeny afro (TWA), but it’s not long enough to do much styling.

It may take a while before our hair is long enough for you to do much with, and besides, you’re still waiting for that shine and bounce you had before. This stage can feel like your hair is in limbo or worse: that it’s lost its luster forever, which can make you feel self-conscious.

The good news is that your hair doesn’t have to stay this way. Wigs are the perfect solution!

Why Wear Wigs?

One of the best things about wigs is that you can get almost any look you want. You can wear a long straight wig with a bob style or even go so far as to wear a curly wig with an afro puff. If your hair is damaged from over-styling or heat damage, then wearing a wig until it grows back in can be an excellent option for you.

Wigs also make for an excellent protective style. You can rock your natural curls without worrying about heat damage or humidity. Wearing a wig will protect your hair from harsh weather and keep your curls intact until you decide to take it off.

If you have short natural hair and want to grow it out but don’t want to commit to wearing your hair out in public yet, then wearing a wig is a perfect way to grow your hair out without facing the scrutiny of others.

Don’t get me wrong: I love changing up my hair. I used to rock box braids and twists, but these weave styles put too much strain on my hair, causing me to lose spots that I thought were gone for good, but wigs have helped me grow them back.

Plopping a wig on my head is the perfect solution to my hair woes because it serves two functions: a gorgeous “do” for a night out and much-needed protection for my strands. Plus, wigs don’t put stress on my hair strands like weaves do (more on the difference between weave and wigs here).

It’s so easy: I wash and deep-condition my hair, twist it into cornrows, put on a wig, and there’s my new look.

Before we go any further it is essential to differentiate between the types of wigs out there.

Synthetic Wigs vs. Human Hair Wigs

When looking for a new wig, the first thing to consider is your budget. A cheap wig will do for everyday wear, but if you are attending an important event or prefer a high-quality wig, choose to spend a little more.

So, which one is better?

It really depends on your personal preference. If you have got a lot of time on your hands and are willing to spend a lot of money on a wig “with that just walked out of the hairdresser’s look”, then go for a human hair wig. But if you don’t want to spend so much time and money maintaining it, go for a synthetic wig!

Human hair wigs are still the most preferred choice for some, as they look and feel more natural. However, synthetic wigs are a viable option for those who cannot afford to shell out thousands of dollars on a hairpiece.

When purchasing a wig, look into whether the product needs to be treated before wearing it. Some human hair wigs need conditioning treatments and/or frequent washing to retain their shape, while synthetic wigs may come pre-styled with curls.

I have been wearing wigs for quite some time now, and I used to wear synthetic wigs. Synthetic wigs are cheaper but are not as durable as human hair wigs.

So why pay more? You may think human hair wigs are too expensive, but they are worth every penny you spend on them because of their quality and durability.

A lot of people who have bought synthetic wigs regret their decision because these wigs do not last long, even with proper care and maintenance. But if you buy a human hair wig, it will last a few years with appropriate care.

How to Choose the Right Wig

Now that we cover the difference between synthetic and human wigs, how do you choose the right wig? When it comes to wigs, one size does not fit all. Choosing the right wig for you is a very personal and important decision.

There are many options available: lace front, capless, braid front, and wig caps, just to name a few. Each type of wig has its own advantages and disadvantages.

Let Your Personality Shine Through

The key to choosing the right wig is to find the one that best fits your look and personality.

When choosing your new wig, matches your mood on any given day. You should feel comfortable wearing it, and you shouldn’t be afraid to show off your new look! There are wigs that let you express your own personality, from straight and sassy to full of curls.

Wigs come in different shapes and sizes, so whether you want long hair, short hair, curly hair, or straight hair, you have a range of options for you.  If you want something with more volume, try one of our bouncy curls or head-turning waves.  Feeling bold? Try Something colorful and vibrant. Take time to consider what style will work best with the shape of your face.

Find Your Style

How you wear your wig can have as much influence on your overall appearance as the style of the wig itself. For example, if you choose a lace front option but don’t style it correctly, it may not look natural or like you.

If you do not wear your hair in a manner similar to what it would look like naturally, it will be obvious that you are wearing a wig. To get this effect right, pay attention to how your hair naturally falls while styling your hair every day. This will also help you adjust your part (if you have one) to better suit your wig.

Wigs are a versatile and fun protective style. They come in various lengths, colors, textures, and types. Wigs can be worn straight, curly, or wavy. There are many options to choose from.

So what are you waiting for? Are you ready to slay these wigs while growing your natural hair?
