Comicstaan releases Season 2 trailer

comicstaan

As guaranteed, the trailer for Comicstaan Season 2 was recently released by Amazon Prime Video, which gives us a look at the 10 new candidates of the stand-up comedy competition. The old judges and mentors, namely Kenny Sebastian, Kanan Gill, Biswa Kalyan Rath, and Kaneez Surka return to the show along with Sumukhi Suresh, Zakir Khan, and Neeti Palta joining the team. Abish Mathew and Urooj Ashfaq will be the hosts for the show. July 12th has been decided as the date of release of Comicstaan 2.

The season 2 trailer of Comicstaan shows a minor improvement in the balance between the two genders amongst the participating contestants, having a total of four women among the ten contestants in the show. This is quite an improvement of from having only a single woman contestant from the first season. Admittedly, the balance is better when we look at the judges as well. As opposed to just one female judge in the first season of the show, there are two more, namely, Neeti Palta and Sumukhi Suresh. Both these ladies are replacing two judges, Span Verma, and Naveen Richard, who will not be a part of this season.

In case you’re wondering the reasons behind the absence of Tanmay Bhat — who filled in as a judge and coach on Comicstaan season 1 — Amazon dropped him in November over concerns regarding the #MeToo movement. Bhat also resigned from All India Bakchod, the sketch satire group that he was a co-founder of, over charges of inaction over the sexual harassment case filed against him in October. AIB has since been effectively dissolved.

For Amazon India, Comicstaan season 2 is the first series that is unscripted and the fourth one that is original in 2019. This is after the other two 2019 originals, Four More Shots Please! And Mind the Malhotras, which were released respectively in January and June, failed to make a mark amongst the audience. Zoya Akhtar directed Made in Heaven, released in March, got a comparatively larger success.

Each of the eight episodes of Season 2 of Comicstaan will be released on July 12th on Amazon Prime Video in India.
