Atsede Nigussiem is only 26 but she has been given a life sentence no woman should ever have to endure.
She has been left blinded and unable to speak after her mouth was melted shut. Shockingly, the perpetrator of this heinous crime was Astede’s own husband who cruelly poured acid over her.
Atsede was at home in Tigrai, Ethiopia, when she opened the door to her estranged husband Haimanot Kahsai, 29.
Out of the blue he launched his sickening acid attack – leaving his wife in the most horrific pain she had ever felt in her life.
This all as their five-year-old son Hannibal Kahsai slept inside.
Atsede’s injuries are so severe she has to eat and drink through a straw. The mom-of-one says she spends all day crying – one of the few things she can still do.
Her body has been left traumatized from the strong chemicals inflicted upon her. She is completely unrecognizable from her former self.
After the attack, Atsede ran screaming into the street for help from neighbors while her husband fled into the night.
Two months later, Atsede is still in indescribable pain. Her mouth has been melted together so she cannot talk and she is blind in her left eye.
Doctors say she is at severe risk of losing the sight in her right eye.
Atsede is currently receiving treatment from burns specialists in Bangkok, Thailand.
Communicating in writing, she said: ‘I don’t know why my husband did this. I was at my parents house late at night.’
‘I just opened the door and it happened. I’m heartbroken and in pain.’
Atsede been married for five years to her husband before he moved to Yemen for work in February. He then cut all contact with his wife and son.
He later returned unexpectedly on July 15 of this year and launched the unprovoked acid attack at around 11pm.
Atsede was rushed to hospital where doctors gave her emergency care for wounds on her face, chest, hands and legs.
But doctors in Ethiopia recommended that she travel abroad for long-term care and treatment.
Astede then flew to Bangkok with her sister where burns specialists at the city’s Vejthani Hospital are now battling her eyesight.
Regional manager Masha Zhigunova said Atsede ‘cries non stop’ and cannot talk, eat or drink properly because her ‘mouth is melted together’.
She said: ‘This is a very difficult case. Atsede’s face will never be the same again.’
‘One eye is gone and the second eye is almost gone and her skin is all melted.’
‘Even she has no idea why the husband did this. She reported this to the police but he had already ran away.’
Zhigunova said that Atsede is being treated by Dr Sivat Luanraksa who specializes in severe burns.
She added: ‘Atsede requires debridement of necrotic tissue on her face and extremities.’
‘Secondly, she needs debridement and acellular dermal matrix grafting and thirdly, split thickness skin grafting.
‘Thankfully now she is the best place with one of the world’s best doctors looking after her. We’re all supporting her.’
Zhigunova has launched a donations page for Atsede’s private medical care.
