Nineteen children have been left fatherless after a Michigan man was brutally murdered.
Rickey Dempsey, 34, leaves behind 17 children, and was expecting two more. But was fatally shot on Sunday.
Dempsey was gunned down at around 3am in a parking lot across the street from the Boogie Down motorcycle club, according to WLIX. A party had been taking place there.
A friend rushed him to nearby Henry Ford Allegiance Health, where he was pronounced dead, Jackson police reported.
No arrests have been made yet.
Dempsey’s girlfriend, Allie Navarre, who was not at the party, told Michigan Live the tragic shooting had nothing to do with her partner.
Navarre claims he was trying to break up a fight up and ‘was just caught in the crossfire’.
She and Dempsey have three children together – ages seven, five and 10 months. Navarre is currently pregnant with their fourth, a baby girl due in December.
She described her deceased partner as playful, nurturing and caring with his children.
Dempsey’s oldest child is 15 years old while his youngest is just nine months old.
‘He left a lot of them behind,’ LaToyia Dempsey said of her brother. ‘He did do for all of them…the best way he could.’
According to Dempsey’s sister, he was providing for his kids the best he could and was employed in the construction trade.
Dempsey seemed to be turning his life around after being released from federal prison last year.
In March 2012, he’d been sentenced to four years for being a felon in possession of a firearm. He also had a list of felony convictions – mostly for drugs crimes.
Court documents reveal that in 2011 he admitted to police he was selling crack cocaine and was once a member of the Vice Lords gang.
But in prison, he earned his GED and various certificates, including a forklift license.
‘He just really tried to change his life around and do for the better, focus on his kids,’ Navarre said sadly.
