We are finally into the final phase of the traditional awards season with the Academy Awards on the horizon.

The event, slated to take place on March 4, is the 90th edition of the most prestigious film awards on the planet.

This year’s awards show promises to be a special event with the nominations list featuring a highly diverse selection of names.

The nominations for the ninetieth annual Academy award were released live last month by Tiffany Haddish and Andy Serkis from the Samuel Goldwyn Theatre.

Some pre-taped introductions were also made by high profile names such as Priyanka Chopra, Rosario Dawson, Gal Gadot, Salma Hayek, Michelle Rodriguez, and Zoe Saldana.

‘The Shape of Water’ led the pack with an impressive 13 nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Actress for Richard Jenkins and Sally Hawkins, respectively.

Next up was ‘Dunkirk’ which had eight nominations including Best Picture and Best Director.

Films which struck a chord with fans such as ‘Get Out’ and ‘Lady Bird’ also scored big with five nominations each.

And this time around there were no controversies as Black actors such as  Denzel Washington, Spencer, Daniel Kaluuya, Mary J. Blige and Jordan Peele were also included.

The Academy Awards honor the very best in film and the celebrations have kicked off with the annual Nominees luncheon in Los Angeles on Monday.

Normally a low-key affair, this year’s nominees luncheon was no different as it took place with little to no fuss.

The event which took place on Monday saw a host of star names including  Mary J. Blige, Sam Rockwell, Margot Robbie, Octavia Spencer, Timothée Chalamet, Steven Spielberg, Saoirse Ronan, Sally Hawkins, Greta Gerwig, Laurie Metcalf and more in attendance.

Surprise appearances were made by Academy board member Laura Dern and ABC president Bob Iger.

Retired basketball player Kobe Bryant also made his first appearance at the luncheon following his nomination for  Best Animated Short for Dear Basketball.

The annual luncheon offers a relatively serene environment for stars to mingle, dine and swap ideas without the pressure of awards being announced.

Of course, there is no party without food and guests were treated to servings from a highly rated chef.

Guests dined on baby spinach salad, Chilean sea bass with lemon, white quinoa and roasted asparagus as the main course.

While for dessert, the stars enjoyed mini lemon tarts, mini tiramisu cups, and fresh berries.

Iconic actress and singer Mary J Blige was one of the very first celebrities to arrive on the red carpet at the event.

And why wouldn’t she, Blige is nominated for Best Supporting Actress for her role in Mudbound, and also received a Best Original Song nod for writing and performing the film’s ‘Might River’.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri star Sam Rockwell was spotted in a huddle with Laura Dern introducing newbie Kobe Bryant to the scene.

Octavia Spencer was also seen talking excitedly about the new Black Panther movie while mingling with a group of people, including ABC president Iger,

The 2018 Oscars ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center on March 4, 2018.
